'Overshadowed' refers to the Jungian psychiatric principle 'Enantiodromia'; a term which describes an emergence of an unconscious or shadow opposite. A principle coined by psychiatrist Carl Jung, to define how something powerful and threatening is cathected, when repressed individuality breaks through conscious control, from beneath the persona.

Associated with the mental disorder neurosis, a person with plural personas is said to wear a theatrical mask to perform a social role, which is designed to make a definite impression upon others, while concealing the true nature of their individuality.

Jung used the term Enantiodromia particularly to refer to the unconscious acting against the wishes of the conscious mind. (Aspects of the Masculine, chap. 7, par. 294).
